The Foals’ tour of China came to an end on Saturday evening. The team are now travelling back to Germany with a great impression of the country.
The Borussia players came together for one last photo in Pudong international airport in Shanghai. In the picture they held a huge banner thanking their Chinese fans for their hospitality and support during the six-day trip in the country. “What we got to experience here was staggering. You’re always a bit sceptical of a trip right after the season ends, but it was an unforgettable experience for the players, the officials and the whole team,” said Max Eberl.
Borussia had a lot of activities to do every day, from visiting partners and the Fohlen football school to seeing the club’s offices in China, signing autographs, making TV appearances and going to the German consulate general. Despite the jet lag, the players always had smiles on their faces. “The team were positive with the tour right from the first second and went along with it very well. There were obligations that they had every day, but they did them without complaining,” added Eberl.
Winning the hearts of fans
Borussia seem to have won the hearts of a lot of fans after their trip to China. No matter where they went, they were well-received by the locals. The players also took the time to sign every autograph and pose for every photo that the fans wanted. “The fans’ reactions show that we’ve stood out from the other clubs that pretty much stay behind closed doors when they do a trip like this. The whole thing embodies exactly what the club stands for: friendship and family,” said Peter Hambüchen, Borussia’s head of international business development.
Overall, it wasn’t hard to feel settled in a country that welcomed Borussia with open arms. “The hospitality and friendliness of the Chinese people was exceptional. Everyone was very respectful and helpful. You have to experience it yourself, and then you lose any prejudices you have against the people here very quickly,” said Max Eberl.
The work continues
Whilst the players made their way home from Shanghai on Saturday evening via Dubai and Frankfurt, the work for Hambüchen and his team continues. The tour of China was an important building block for Borussia entering the Asian market. “With our new projects and our office in Shanghai, we’ve already got something established. The team visiting was obviously extremely important for the people to see the faces that represent the club,” added Hambüchen.
