“It is an honour to be named Borussia player of the season and I’m delighted. It is an especially special award as it is the fans who have voted for it and they are the ones cheering us on either in the stadium or at home on TV. As a player, an accolade such as this one is valued very highly. I’m very proud,” said Sommer. In the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, Sommer started all 34 matches and didn’t miss a single minute of Borussia’s league campaign. Only Hannover 96’s Waldemar Anton, FC Bayern München’s Joshua Kimmich and VfB Stuttgart’s Ron-Robert Zieler also played every minute this season for their respective clubs. In his fifth season with the Foals, Sommer also captained the team on fifteen occasions in Lars Stindl’s absence.
13 clean sheets this season
Switzerland’s first choice goalkeeper secured an impressive thirteen clean sheets this season and only RB Leipzig’s Péter Gulácsi kept more this season (15 clean sheets). On average, Sommer also only conceded 1.24 goals per game across the entire season. This was the third lowest average in the Bundesliga with only Manuel Neuer (0.92) and Gulácsi (0.82) conceding fewer goals per match. Borussia fans had already voted Sommer as the player of the month on four separate occasions this season (December, January, February and April). Sommer added: “Credit also has to be given to the players in front of me on the pitch. By and large, we played very well this season. There were a couple phases where we didn’t play as well but every team goes through these phases in a season. It is great to see that the fans value my work so highly.”
