Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed Stefan Lainer from Austrian double winners RB Salzburg.
The 26-year-old right-back has signed a five-year-deal running until June 2024. Lainer has played 15 times for the Austrian national side, 144 times in the Austrian Bundesliga and 44 times in European competitions. “We are pleased to sign Stefan Lainer,” commented sporting director Max Eberl. “He is a dynamic full-back, with a strong mentality and plenty of experience at a high level.”
“The next step in my development”
“I’m delighted that the move has happened and now I’m looking forward to the challenge at Borussia – both domestically and internationally. I want to get the best out of myself here and take the next step in my development,” said Lainer, who has followed new head coach Marco Rose to Gladbach. “Obviously the coach played a role in my decision,” he confirmed, “but Borussia are still a massive club with huge potential, which is why I’m happy to be here now.”
The right-back has footballing talent in his genes, as his father Leo won eight Austrian Bundesliga titles during the 80s and 90s (three with Austria Salzburg and Rapid Vienna and two with Tirol). Stefan began his career at SV Seekirchen, where he stayed until 2006. He then signed for Red Bull Salzburg and played for several of their youth sides, before going out on loan to SV Grödig for the 2011/12 season. He then joined Salzburg’s feeder club FC Liefering in 2012.
Four titles and three cups
At the start of the 2014/15 season, Stefan Lainer moved to SV Ried who were playing in the Austrian Bundesliga and made his debut on the 19th July 2014. The right-back went on to play 33 games that season. In the summer of 2015, Lainer moved back to Red Bull Salzburg, where he was a youth player. He went on to make 110 league appearances (9 goals), 44 Europa League games (1 goal) and 17 domestic cup appearance (3 goals) and played a key role during his team’s four league victories and three cup victories. In the 2017/18 season, he got to the UEFA Europa League semi-final with Salzburg.
Between 2006 and 2010, Lainer made 15 appearances for his national team’s youth teams (U19, U18, U17, U16). In March 2017, the right-back was called-up to the Austrian national team for the first time and made his debut in a friendly against Finland. He has so far played a further 14 times for his national team.
