Ibrahima Traoré and Guinea remain without a win at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt after losing narrowly 1-0 to Nigeria on Wednesday.
After drawing 2-2 in their opening game vs. Madagascar, Guinea and Ibrahima Traoré were again unable to celebrate a win at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. A largely balanced game saw group-favourites Nigeria narrowly run out as 1-0 winners over Guinea. Guinea coach Paul Put changed his formation from a 4-1-4-1 to a 4-2-3-1, with Traoré, again captaining the side, playing at right wing in the new system. Once play got underway however, Traoré was unable to really get into the game as Guinea retreated further and further into their own half.
For large periods, Guinea kept their opponents comfortably at bay, but it was from a 73rd minute corner that Nigeria took the lead through Kenneth Oneru. Guinea were unable to respond and fell to a 1-0 defeat. Traoré and his team must win their final game to have a chance as progressing to the last 16 as potentially one of four best third-placed teams. Guinea face Burundi on Sunday evening (KO 18:00 CEST) with everything to play for.
