The Foals began their second week of pre-season preparations on Monday and on Wednesday evening, they will kick off in their first pre-season friendly at the Grenzlandstadion (KO 18:30 CEST).
Yesterday the squad were given a chance for a breather – the first day off under the new head coach Marco Rose – it will also, for the time being, be their last day off. As now they will begin their intensive pre-season training. “We’ve got 14 days of training in a row now and so yesterday was important for the boys to have a bit of downtime, both physically and mentally,” Rose explained.
The return of Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria, Matthias Ginter and new arrival Stefan Lainer has bolstered the training group – and that has pleased Rose. “When the group is bigger, you have more opportunities to work on specific things in training,” the head coach said. Michael Lang and Tony Jantschke will also be back in the frame soon. Lang has been ill with the flu and Jantschke had to train individually today due to a muscle problem.
Neither Jantschke nor Lang will, however, be back in time for the first pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening (KO 18:30 CEST) in Rheydter’s Grenzlandstadion against 1. FC Mönchengladbach. For all of the remaining players, the match between the two teams from the same city is their first opportunity to impress the new boss in competitive conditions. Alongside the friendly, there are six further training sessions scheduled – Monday at 16:00, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 and a double helping on Friday; at 10:00 (Athletic training) and at 16:00 (All times CEST).
