In their opening friendly of the 2019/20 pre-season, Borussia will take on city rivals 1. FC Mönchengladbach in the Grenzlandstadion in Rheydt tomorrow evening (18:30 CEST). Live coverage will be available on Facebook.
Marco Rose will take charge of the Foals for the first time tomorrow evening as Borussia kick-start their pre-season with a Mönchengladbach derby. “I’m very excited to be taking charge of Borussia for the first time tomorrow evening,” said Rose. Understandably, the result against the sixth tier Landesliga side will be subordinate compared with the performance but Rose is nevertheless expecting a strong, engaged performance from his side. “We are still in the opening stages of our work together,” said the 42 year-old. “However, when the players are wearing that kit, they should be doing the right things. I hope that they are excited to play and the fans in the stadium tomorrow will see what we can offer.”
Rose and his coaching staff are not the only members of the Foals’ team that will be making their debuts tomorrow. New signings Max Grün and Stefan Lainer are also in contention to feature tomorrow night. The Austrian, who joined up with his new club last Friday following an extended break due to international duty, is likely to feature for around 45 minutes tomorrow evening. This will also apply to the other players returning from international duty. A quartet of Borussia U23s players have also been called up to Rose’s squad for tomorrow’s friendly. Michael Lieder, Aaron Herzog, Kaan Kurt and Charalambos Makridis will all hope to gather match time and impress the new senior coaching team.
Poulsen returns for pre-season
Unfortunately, tomorrow’s friendly has arrived too soon for Switzerland defender Michael Lang, who completed an individual training session today as he recovers from flu. Andreas Poulsen, who recently played at the U21s European Championship for Denmark, only returned for pre-season training on Tuesday and is unlikely to feature tomorrow. Four further players ruled out of the friendly with injury are Jordan Bayer (muscle problems), Lars Stindl, Breel Embolo and Julio Villalba. The latter three are all currently returning to full fitness. Florian Neuhaus is yet to return for pre-season training after Germany reached the U21s European Championship final whle Ibrahima Traoré will return at a later date after Guinea were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening.
Borussia and 1. FC Mönchengladbach haven’t faced each other in almost 25 years. The last meeting between the city rivals was on 5th August 1994 as Borussia scored nine goals on course to victory. Alongside an own goal, the Foals goalscorers were Martin Max (x2), Peter Wynhoff (x2), Thomas Eichin (x2), Bachirou Sakiz and Heiko Herrlich.
Standing tickets for tomorrow’s friendly cost 10 euros while seats are 15 euros each. Concessions are available for 5 euros in the Grenzlandstadion in Rheydt while there will be live coverage of Borussia’s opening summer friendly on Facebook.
