Borussia held their traditional season-opening event on Sunday. Main club sponsor Postbank arranged an action-packed programme and Jünter day for the fans.
The Foals have kicked off the new campaign with their traditional season-opening event. More than 60,000 fans enjoyed the excellent weather in BORUSSIA-PARK, as well as the Bitburger beer garden and the FohlenWelt.
The family event also gave fans the chance to meet their heroes, as Raffael, Breel Embolo & Co. signed autographs and chatted to the supporters by the Postbank main stage. “I didn’t experience this kind of large-scale event in Salzburg. It’s really impressive,” commented new signing Stefan Lainer. Captain Lars Stindl also added: “I get the feeling that more and more people come to this event every year and there is always much more to do. It gives us a good feeling ahead of the new season.”
Yann Sommer was awarded his trophy for being named the fans’ Player of the Season for 2018/19. Fans’ representative Thomas ‘Tower’ Weinmann handed the award over on behalf of the fans. “It’s a great award to receive because the fans voted for it. I’m really proud,” said Sommer.
“Work together and as a unit”
New head coach Marco Rose was given a particularly warm welcome by the fans. “I hope that we can all work together and as a unit,” said Rose, who received applause for this statement by the crowd. “We are fully aware that the team needs to create the momentum on the pitch,” added the coach.
President Rolf Königs, vice-president Siegfried Söllner and member of the board Hans Meyer asked the fans to show some patience. “The positive start that the new coach has made won’t necessarily carry on without any bumps in the road. It would be great if everyone supports us fully, even when things aren’t going to plan,” said Meyer.
The fans were also able to enjoy an action-packed programme on the stages outside the ground. “just:is”, “Nancy Franck”, “Rick Arena” and “Specktakel” all performed on the Postbank main stage, while juggler Luca Pferdmenges entertained the children, who also had a “Start Wars” show and puppet theatre to keep them busy. “Rick’s Juniortime & Specktakel” and the “Kinderchor Zetzen” also provided the music for the youngsters.
The supporters had various places around BORUSSIA-PARK where they could do some exercise too. Postbank provided some goal wall shooting games, while Puma had a station which tested speed. Another activity tested the visitors’ ability to kick a ball into a cement mixer.
Over 7,000 fans at Jünter day
Just as last year, Jünter day took place at the same time to the season-opening event. The Jünter stage is situated to the south of BORUSSIA-PARK. A magician Sebastian, a children’s band “Fux” and the “Fauth Dance Company” performed exclusively for members of the JünterClub. The young Foals also enjoyed the bouncy castles and a climbing wall. “We got a lot of positive feedback at Jünter day. We counted 7,000 JünterClub members including their parents, which is more than last year,” reflected Thomas Jaspers, who is in charge of looking after Borussia’s club members.
The season has now been officially opened ahead of the first competitive fixture of the season next Friday. The Foals will face second-division side SV Sandhausen in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (20:45 CEST), before taking on FC Schalke 04 at home a week later in the Bundesliga (Saturday, 17th August, 18:30 CEST).
