We gathered the thoughts from the players, Max Eberl and Marco Rose after Borussia beat SV Sandhausen 1-0 on Friday night to reach the DFB-Pokal second round.
Matthias Ginter: We were away from home against a second-division side and playing our first competitive game without any real rhythm, so it was always going to be a tough match. It was a real scrap. Sandhausen really threw everyone forward in the closing stages. It was a massive game for Sandhausen, and credit to them for the fight they showed. We put up as much resistance as we could. After my clash with Yann, I couldn’t catch my breath for a few seconds, but I’m feeling fine now and hopefully there are no problems. I’ll have to wait for the results of an examination.
Tobias Strobl: There’s no point in pretending that we didn’t play well today. It’s always tricky right after pre-season; you’re not really sure where you’re at. Sandhausen have already had a couple of competitive games. We didn’t fully execute the coach’s plan today. Our play with the ball at our feet wasn’t anywhere near what we’re capable of. We know that there’s still a lot of work to do. We were ready to take on battle though. At the end of the day, it’s all about results. We won 1-0 and we’re into the next round – that‘s what counts.
Sporting director Max Eberl: Both teams demonstrated a lot of mental strength and commitment tonight. We have a striker who can score a goal from one chance – that’s what decided the game. It was an even match and Sandhausen played really well. They didn’t allow themselves to be undone by our press, playing the ball long into the centre, and they have big players there to bring it down. There were moments where we needed to have more composure on the ball when playing out from the back. We ought to have had more possession too, particularly in the second half. It was pretty borderline in terms of the challenges flying in, but I didn’t see anything I would consider unfair. The lads put up a good fight and kept on getting back up, so credit to them.
Head coach Marco Rose: We’re delighted to have won our first competitive game. I think everyone knows just how much hard work it was for us. Our opponents really put a lot into the game physically and the conditions certainly played their part too. The boys gave as good as they got though, which was good to see. There are of course some teething problems and fitness was no doubt an issue, but we can take the positives and we’re into the next round. We’re well aware that there’s a lot of hard work to come in the next weeks and months, however.
