Ramy Bensebaini joins The Foals from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes.
The 24-year-old defender has signed a four-year contract lasting until June 2023. “Ramy is the player we have still been looking for in our squad. He can play as a left-back or central defender and brings a lot of experience with him from three successful years at a very good club in Ligue 1,” said Borussia’s sporting director Max Eberl. Bensebaini recently won the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 with the Algeria national team.
Bensebaini began his career in his city of birth with CS Constantine. After two years he joined the Paradou AC youth academy in Algiers. Towards the end of the 2012/13 season he made it into the senior team there and made his first appearance in Algeria’s second tier.
At 19 years old, Bensebaini moved to Europe in summer 2014 on a loan deal with Belgian first division side Lierse SK, where he quickly became a first team regular (29 apps, 2 goals). In the subsequent season, Bensebaini was again sent out on loan, this time to Ligue 1 side HSC Montepellier, where he made 25 appearances (2 goals).
His good performances attracted the attention of league rivals Stade Rennes and Bensebaini moved there in summer 2016, where he was a key player for the last three years. In total, he played 98 games (3 goals) for the French team, 79 in Ligue 1, nine in the Europa League and five in the Coupe de France, which he won last season with Rennes. The underdogs defeated Paris Saint-Germain 8-7 on penalties in the final.
A few weeks later, Bensebaini was already lifting his next trophy. He triumphed at the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria. Apart from a group game against Tanzania, the left-back was in the starting XI for all six matches of the tournament. Overall, Bensebaini has played 25 times for his country (2 goals). He made his debut on 7th January 2017 in a friendly game against Mauritius (3-1).
