Head coach Marco Rose speaks to the press ahead of Saturday’s away game at 1. FSV Mainz 05 (15:30 CEST) about…
…squad news: "We will have to do without Jonas Hofmann, Tobias Strobl and Torben Müsel who are all out with knee injuries, as well as Lars Stindl and Julio Villalba, who are in recovery training. Christoph Kramer has been back training with the team since the start of the week and is an option for us again. We have not made a final decision on whether Ramy Bansebaini will be in the squad. Basically, he needs another one or two weeks to get match fit, but who knows what might happen before Saturday."
…his time as a Mainz player: "In my first year at Mainz we missed out on promotion by one goal, which was a very tough experience. But I took a lot away from my time there. Namely, that it always pays to keep trying and eventually hard work is rewarded. The next year we went up with a much lower points total, and today Mainz is an established Bundesliga, thanks to the foundations we laid back then."
…our upcoming opponents: “We are coming up against an opponent who has a good structure on and off the ball. We’ll have to wait and see what system Mainz use, but we can already be sure that after their recent result they will play aggressively at home and fight for everything. We will need to have the right attitude and create good chances to break down their structure."
…his relationship with Mainz coach Sandro Schwarz: "The fact we have been close friends for years has been discussed a lot in the last few days. But I would like to emphasise once again that Saturday is not about Sandro Schwarz versus Marco Rose or about our friendship. The only thing that matters for the 90 minutes on Saturday is our responsibility to our clubs."
…the development of new ideas: "We are going through a process. You cannot measure in percentages how far we have come. There will be games where it seems we are making great leaps forward and there will be games where it seems we have taken a step back. We are making great progress in our game off the ball, but then we often lose our composure in possession. We’re going through this part of the process at the moment. We are aiming to have a good balance in all phases of the game."
