Marcus Thuram speaks about the 2-1 victory in the Rhine derby against Fortuna Düsseldorf, his role as a super-sub and his first Bundesliga goals.
Marcus, what are your thoughts on the 2-1 win against Fortuna Düsseldorf?
Thuram: It was a physical performance from the whole team. I’m very happy that we managed to turn the game around and pick up the victory.
In your opinion, why did you struggle at the start of the game?
Thuram: We had a very difficult game on Thursday in the Europa League. Against Düsseldorf, we needed 45 minutes to forget about the match against Wolfsberg and to really get into our stride. In the second half we played football the Borussia way. And in the end we got the victory, which is the most important thing. Now, in order to push on from this, we need to watch a few videos back and analyse the game. Ultimately, we won the game because of our spirit as a team, and we were rewarded for our efforts.
How did you feel about starting the game on the bench?
Thuram: I respected the decision. We have lots of great players this season and we need to rotate. There were other players who were a lot fresher than I was. And in the end it was the right decision by the coach.
What did Marco Rose say to you at half time?
Thuram: He told me to get ready and to try to change the game, which is what I did and I’m very happy that I could make a difference.
With your first two Bundesliga goals, you played a vital role in the win...
Thuram: It was a very special day for me because I scored my first ever Bundesliga goals. But if we hadn’t managed to win the game in the end, then they would’ve counted for nothing. The team is the most important thing so winning the game is all that mattered. Every single player played their part today.
