We gathered the reaction from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-0 Europa League win away at Wolfsberger AC.
Yann Sommer: It was a hard-fought win. It certainly wasn’t the best game of football. Wolfsberg made things very difficult for us; they pressed us hard for the full 90 minutes, which made it tough to play out from the back. We had to resort to playing a lot of long balls, which is what they were hoping for, and the conditions weren’t easy either. The three points are vital for us though. That puts us in a good position going into the final group game. We want to reach the next round in the Europa League and we’ll need a good performance against Basaksehir to make that happen.
Tobias Strobl: We actually got into the game well for the first ten minutes or so, but then Wolfsberg switched things up and caused us a lot of problems. We knew that we’d have to deal with them pressing us high up the pitch, but we made a few mistakes in our build-up play and that allowed them to get into the game. We battled hard though. Now we only need a draw against Basaksehir to go through, and were determined to make it. If we take on the challenge against them like we did today, then we’ll progress to the knockouts.
Stefan Lainer:It was a well-balanced and hard-fought game, with good chances for both teams. We knew what to expect, that Wolfsberg would defend resiliently, press high and look to get behind the defence. It was difficult to defend against, but I think that we improved compared to the first meeting and deserved to win.
Marco Rose: We started well, but then Wolfsberg adjusted to our setup and that caused us problems. We struggled to get going again after that, so credit to our opponents – they’re incredibly tough to deal with. If you only try to play through Wolfsberg, they can pick you to pieces, but you don’t want to only play long balls either. Finding the right approach isn’t easy, but the boys did well. They put up a lot of resistance and got the clean sheet, which was crucial. It was only a matter of time until we produced the decisive attack.
