We gathered the reaction from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 4-2 win over SC Freiburg on Sunday.
Stefan Lainer: That was a lot of fun, despite the freezing cold. We can be very happy. The performance was just what we were after. We were aggressive from the start and controlled the game. We were desperate to win and I think that you could sense that. The atmosphere in the stadium was brilliant as always. We can be really proud of our fans. It was a great afternoon for everyone at Borussia. The two goals conceded from set pieces are of course frustrating, but we didn’t allow them much from open play and defended well. All in all, it was a deserved win. It’s nice to get the three points and stay top of the table. It’s still only something to savour for now though. We welcome FC Bayern here next week and we’re all looking forward to it.
Yann Sommer: It was a good performance – we created a lot of chances. We allowed them to have a few too many chances from set pieces and crosses, but it was a solid game in general. We’re not really thinking about being top all that much. FC Bayern are coming to BORUSSIA-PARK next and it’s sure to be another big and important game. We just want to take things one step at a time. It was a tough week for us. We’ve faced teams who are difficult to play against recently. Now we look to the future.
Patrick Herrmann: Going 1-0 up early on was very important. Scoring early on often sends the game in a certain direction, even though we conceded the equaliser almost immediately. You could sense that we really wanted the win though and weren’t fazed by their goal. We played some quality football in the second half. You could tell from the goals that our chemistry is really good. It’s a lot of fun playing at home at the moment, especially when you can reclaim top spot in the table in front of your own fans.
Marco Rose: If it’s a game neutrals can enjoy and we end up winning, then I’m happy too. It was a great game. You could see how tight things can be in football sometimes, but I think that we deserved to win in the end. The lads worked very hard off the ball and created a lot of clear-cut goalscoring opportunities. Given that we’ve had a tough week and a tiring match in Austria on Thursday, it was a brilliant performance. Credit to the lads.
Freiburg coach Christian Streich: It was an interesting and high-intensity game. Gladbach have real quality in attack and it was hard for us. We pressed high, but Borussia kept putting the ball into a couple of pockets, held it up well and got players into the game. There were one or two moments where we could have defended better, but there were some where we couldn’t deal with their quality. We kept trying to play our game and had two huge chances to level the scores at 3-3. That would have made things very interesting.
