The day after: Easy goals conceded, not enough effort and Bensebaini not involved – all the important information after the 3-1 defeat to Heracles Almelo.
How it happened:
The Foals were looking to make a strong start in their first friendly match of their winter preparation and took the lead through Breel Embolo after 18 minutes. Heracles started to grow into the game as time went on and turned the game on its head through a Cyriel Dessers brace shortly before the break (33’, 38’). “The first half was poor from us; Almelo put more effort in and were more aggressive, both with and without the ball,” said head coach Marco Rose. The Dutch side remained on top after the interval, despite the Foals lining up with a completely new XI, and extended their advantage through Jeremy Cijntje in the 48th minute (3-1). Borussia’s efforts to get back into the game were ultimately in vain, perhaps due to the high temperatures and the intense training sessions of the previous days taking their toll. “We played better in the second half, but Almelo were far more efficient than us. We made it too easy for them for all three of their goals,” Rose summarised the affair. “We’ve had some really productive sessions up until this point. But we want to get good results, even in these types of games. A loss is never a good thing.”
Ramy Bensebaini missed out on the friendly against Heracles. “Ramy has been ill for a few days. He didn’t feel well enough so we sat him out for the game,” Rose explained after the match. However, the Algerian returned to team training on Wednesday morning. Other absentees for the game were Torben Müsel, Keanan Bennetts, Charalambos Makridis, Famana Quizera and Mamadou Doucouré. Yann Sommer trained individually during the game.
