The Foals beat SC Freiburg twice in their winter training friendlies in Jerez, recording a 2-1 score both times. The Gladbach goalscorers were Alassane Plea (2), Breel Embolo and Keanan Bennetts.
In the first match, the Foals played with courage from the beginning, with Patrick Herrman, Lars Stindl and Stefan Lainer all having good chances, but failed to take the lead against a disciplined Freiburg side in the first 45 minutes. After half-time, the Foals became much more clinical and it paid off when Alassane Plea opened the scoring in the 50th minute. The fans did not have long to wait to see the forward grab another, as he scored 15 minutes later to give Gladbach a 2-0 lead (65’). Freiburg did not let their heads drop, however, and Nils Petersen scored from a corner to make the final score 2-1 to Gladbach.
In their second match against Freiburg, both sides initially didn’t attempt to engage their opponents. As the match progressed, the Foals began to exert their control on the match more and more. However, László Bénes, Jonas Hofmann, Florian Neuhaus and Ibrahima Traoré all missed great chances to take the lead. After the break, Freiburg took a shock lead through Florian Kath. However, Gladbach responded well to going behind, and equalised only ten minutes later through Breel Embolo. Substitute Keanan Bennetts completed the Gladbach comeback with a late goal in the last five minutes to make the final score 2-1.
