Borussia will not be extending Raffael's contract at the end of the season. The Brazilian will leave the club after seven years in the summer.
"It was a purely professional decision we made for the squad. Raffael is a huge part of our history and he's been such a pillar for the club during his time here. After all his service to the club, it's only fair to be honest about his potential playing time in the squad," explained sporting director Max Eberl at Thursday's press conference. "We explained this point to him and we had a lot of positive discussions, now we're parting ways with a great mutual respect for one another."
Raffael was brought into the club in the summer of 2013 from FC Schalke 04 and his been an important part of the Foals' attacking force ever since. In his seven years at the club, he has made 200 competitive appearances for the club, during which he's had a hand in 106 goals (71 goals, 35 assists). "Raffael has done so well here in Mönchengladbach and for the last seven years we've had an amazing player in our ranks. I hope that when he returns to the stadium as a supporter, the fans will give him the proper send off he deserves."
Along with Raffael, Borussia will also not be extending the contracts of Fabian Johnson and Tobias Strobl, with all three players leaving the club after the final game on Saturday. Max Grün on the other hand, has extended his contract with the club for on year until the end of next season (June 2021).
