You can now vote for your Player of the Month for June via the FohlenApp! Yann Sommer, Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann and Breel Embolo are your four candidates for the award, presented by Borussia and Cichon Personalmanagement.
The Foals have had a busy month, playing five matches in total. Marco Rose’s side began the final month of the season with two consecutive away defeats, falling short against both SC Freiburg (1-0) and FC Bayern Munich (2-1); Yann Sommer was voted as the stand-out player on both occasions. However, Borussia then managed to turn their fortunes around and finished the season in fourth place thanks to three consecutive victories: 3-0 against VfL Wolfsburg, 3-1 at SC Paderborn and 2-1 against Hertha BSC. Jonas Hofmann, Lars Stindl and Breel Embolo each received a Man of the Match award, respectively. Voting is available via the FohlenApp and will run until midnight on Thursday!
Yann Sommer: The Swiss shot stopper was as reliant as ever in the month of June, with particularly impressive performances in the two defeats against Freiburg and Bayern. Despite the defeat, Borussia’s number one made a number of saves away at SCF, limiting the hosts to just the one goal; his performance earned him 41% of the votes as the team’s Man of the Match. Despite a missed placed pass early on in the game which led to Bayern taking the lead, the 31-year-old made up for his mistake with a plethora of stops to deny the record champions from extending their lead. 22% of Borussia fans voted the goalkeeper as their stand-out performer in the game.
Jonas Hofmann: The Man of the Match for the 3-0 win against Wolfsburg almost chose itself: Jonas Hofmann took home the award after picking up almost two thirds of the votes. The midfielder put in a performance of the highest order, putting his side on course for victory with a first-half brace. He initially opened the scoring in the game after latching onto Breel Embolo’s precise through ball, before doubling his tally for the afternoon 20 minutes later, finishing off a nice one-two with Matthias Ginter. “I’m very happy with my two goals and that I was able to contribute to the victory,” said Hofmann.
Lars Stindl: The captain came up trumps when the team needed him the most against Paderborn. Just one minute after the team at the bottom of the table netted an equaliser, Lars Stindl drove his side forward, won the team a penalty and converted to put the Foals back into the lead. 18 minutes later, the attacking midfielder sealed the victory for Borussia with his second goal of the afternoon. Stindl was the clear stand-out performer in the game, earning a whopping 66% of the votes.
Breel Embolo: A goal, an assist and a dominating performance; the striker took home the Man of the Match award in the 2-1 win against Hertha BSC with 43% of the votes. The Swiss attacker gave his all for his side, particular through the impressive dedication shown for the opening goal. Embolo waltzed his way past both opposing central defenders in the box, before laying it off perfectly for Jonas Hofmann to tap home the opener. The 23-year-old then crowned an impressive performance with a goal of his own in the 78th minute, with Jonas Hofmann returning the favour and laying it through for him to score.
