The competition for Borussia’s “Player of the Season” – presented by Cichon Personalmanagement – is stiff, as Jonas Hofmann is up against Marcus Thuram, Denis Zakaria, Lars Stindl, Yann Sommer and Ramy Bensebaini.
Attacking free space and keeping his opponents in check are strengths of his and he added clinical finishing to that list at the end of the season just gone: Jonas Hofmann made another step forward in his development in his fifth season with the Foals and consolidated his place in the midfield of head coach Marco Rose’s team. Sometimes putting in defensive work, sometimes becoming a wing-forward, the 27 year old made a total of 29 competitive appearances for Gladbach in 2019/20 (24 in the Bundesliga, 3 in the Europa League, 2 in the DFB-Pokal), in which he scored five goals and provided three assists.
His hard running made Hofmann predestined to fit into the aggressive pressing style wanted by Marco Rose, his anticipation allowed him to gain important possession again and again and made him the initiator in counter-attacks. His intelligent positioning sealed off many gaps in Gladbach’s defence or prevented them from ever opening up in the first place.
As the season entered its decisive stages, Gladbach’s powerhouse also became the goal-getter. He scored a brace against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 32, he scored the opening goal against Hertha Berlin in the season finale and set up the second goal with a superbly precise ball into the area. Borussia’s fans honoured these performances by voting Hofmann Player of the Month in June.
If you think that Jonas Hofmann should be Borussia’s “Player of the Season”, then vote for him on the FohlenApp. In addition to Hofmann, you can vote for Denis Zakari, Lars Stindl, Yann Sommer or Ramy Bensebaini.
