The fans have spoken, and they’ve selected striker Marcus Thuram as Borussia’s Player of the Season.
Marcus Thuram has been selected as Borussia’s Player of the Season, receiving 43.7 per cent of the vote. The Frenchman, who joined Borussia last summer, was the clear winner ahead of Yann Sommer (26.5 per cent), Denis Zakaria (12.9 per cent), Ramy Bensebaini (7.9 per cent), Lars Stindl (4.8 per cent) and Jonas Hofmann (4.2 per cent). Included in the vote were all the players who had won at least one Player of the Month award this past season.
A fan favourite
After joining the Foals, Thuram quickly became a fan favourite at the club. The 22-year-old, who joined from EA Guingamp last summer, was included in the first starting XI of the season in the DFB-Pokal first round against SV Sandhausen. Thuram would go on to score the game-winning goal to lead the Foals to a 1-0 win. In the Bundesliga, the striker recorded his first career goal in Germany’s top flight on matchday 5 against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Thuram didn’t start in the derby against Fortuna, but was subbed on and scored a brace as the Foals won 2-1.
In total, the Frenchman featured in 39 of a possible 42 competitive matches for Borussia this past season. He likely would have made more, if it weren’t for an ankle injury he picked up on matchday 31 against Bayern München. Thuram’s injury required surgery, effectively sidelining him for the remainder of the season. The striker netted 10 goals in 31 Bundesliga games, setting up a further eight along the way. Thuram’s 18 goal involvements for the Foals this Bundesliga season put him in close second behind Alassane Plea (10 goals, 11 assists). Thuram was involved in three goals in the Europa League (2 goals, 1 assist). He scored twice during the Foals’ 2019/20 DFB-Pokal campaign. Additionally, the 1,92 m tall striker recorded a top speed of 35.6km this season - a club high this season and good for fifth place league-wide.
Thuram also quickly became a favourite off the pitch as well. Following the 1-0 win in the derby against 1. FC Köln on matchday 4, Thuram coined a new trademark celebration as he scooped up the corner flag, mounted his jersey on top and waved it around in celebration. Since then, he has marked every Borussia victory with the celebration. “It was a spur-of-the-moment decision in Cologne. I hadn’t planned on doing it. I started it because I saw how much the fans enjoy waving their flags,” Thuram said. “It became a ritual and it’s very important to have rituals like that. It helps make each win feel a bit more special. We all know that it’s going to happen after we’ve won a game. It helps connect us as the team with the fans.”
A four-time Player of the Month
Thuram was selected by a panel of experts, Bundesliga clubs and fans as the league’s Rookie of the Month in September, October and November. He was also selected as Borussia’s Player of the Month four times, in September, November, October and in May.
