Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed midfielder Hannes Wolf on loan from RB Leipzig for the 2020/21 season. The 21-year-old Austrian has signed a contract running until June 2021.
As part of the agreement, Borussia will also have the option to buy Wolf from Leipzig. “Hannes is a versatile player, who already played under our coach Marco Rose in Salzburg and will improve our attacking options,” said sporting director Max Eberl. “He missed a lot of football last season at RB Leipzig due to a long-term injury. We’re pleased that he’s chosen to come here and we hope we will have a lot of success together.”
Hannes Wolf joined Leipzig from RB Salzburg at the start of 2019/20. After a long spell on the sidelines, the midfielder made five cameo appearances in the Bundesliga (53 minutes in total). He played 28 times in Europe (2 goals), nine times in the Austrian Cup (5 goals) and 52 times in the Austrian Bundesliga (16 goals) under Marco Rose between 2017 and 2019, winning the league twice and the cup once in 2018/19.
UEFA Youth League winner with Salzburg
His professional career began for FC Liefering between February 2016 and May 2017. He played 35 second-division matches for RB Salzburg’s partner club, scoring seven goals. Wolf joined Salzburg’s academy from JAZ GU Süd in 2014. After one year in the U16s, he moved up to the U18s in July 2015, winning the UEFA Youth League with Rose in 2016/17. The midfielder was a key member of that side, playing in all seven games, scoring seven goals and assisting a further five. He had a hand in both goals in the 2-1 win over Benfica in the final. He also played for SV Vasoldsberg, SV Gössendorf and SC Seiersberg’s youth sides.
The Graz-born midfielder played three times for Austria’s U16s in 2015. He then appeared ten times for his nation’s U21s side between 2017 and 2019 (4 goals) – one of those goals coming in the 2-0 win over Serbia in the group stage of the U21 Euros in 2019. Wolf has also been in an Austrian senior squad twice, although he is yet to win his first cap.
