DFB-Pokal: Gladbach to face winner of the Bremen Cup
Gladbach will face the winner of the Bremen Cup in the first round oft he DFB-Pokal (11th to 14th September).

The Foals will face the winners of the Bremen Cup in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (11th to 14th September). This was announced in the draw on Sunday evening.

DFB president Fritz Keller and DFB vice general secretary Heike Ullrich conducted the draw for the 32 opening fixtures live on German TV. Due to the interruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, only 41 of the 62 participants are yet known. Placeholders were used in place of the teams which must qualify through regional competitions. The Foals were drawn against a yet-to-be-decided member of the Bremen Football Association for the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

Bremen Cup semi-finals yet to be played

The 2019/20 cup season in Bremen was interrupted before the semi-finals had been played. Sixth-tier side FC Huchting and fifth-tier Blumenthaler SV will face off in the first semi-final, while the second semi-final will be between fifth-tier Borgfeld and last year’s winners FC Oberneuland, who also won each year between 2008 and 2012 and were promoted from the Bremen-Liga to the Regionalliga Nord. The regional cup finals will take place on 22nd August across Germany in the “Amateurs’ Final Day”. “There are still four teams in the race for the Bremen Cup and the associated spot in the DFB-Pokal. Such small clubs can always prove to be a stumbling block, nevertheless we will go into the first-round tie as favourites and we’re excited for a great match,” says Gladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl. “Only two years ago, we played against BSC Hastedt, who were winners of the Bremen Cup.” The 11-1 victory against BSC Hastedt was Gladbach’s biggest ever win in the DFB-Pokal.

The first round of the 2020/21 DFB-Pokal will take place between 11th and 14th September, one week before the start of the new Bundesliga season. The exact timings of the individual matches will be announced at a later date. The second round is scheduled for 22nd/23rd December, the round of 16 is scheduled for 2nd/3rd February 2021 and the quarter-finals for 2nd/3rd March 2021. The semi-finals should take place on the first weekend of May, however this is still subject to talks. It is agreed, however, that the DFB-Pokal final will be played on Thursday, 13th May 2021 in Berlin’s Olympiastadion and therefore not after the end of the league seasons, as it has been previously. This is a special situation, caused by the delayed season start for the 2020/21 season.
