#TSGBMG: Match reaction

After the Foals’ 4-3 defeat to TSG Hoffenheim, we have the reactions of Robin Hack, Julian Weigl, sporting director Nils Schmadtke and the two head coaches Gerardo Seoane and Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Robin Hack: This loss really hurts. We played a lot better in the second half than we did in the first. We fought back, scored two goals and then conceded the winning goal from a counterattack at the end. The desire and attitude were there. The negative thing is that we made too many errors in crucial areas. We have another chance to improve next week. Now, we need to dust ourselves off and keep going. We definitely have to make fewer mistakes, pick up points next week and get ourselves away from the lower reaches of the table as soon as possible.

Julian Weigl: We can’t let that happen. You can’t concede just 30 seconds after the equaliser and go home empty-handed. And this happened despite the shift we put in, even though we didn’t play well in every respect. I’m particularly disappointed with my own mistake. We still managed to fight back and we gave everything to at least pick up a point here. At the end of the day, we just have to be savvier.

Sporting director Nils Schmadtke: The team fought back well to make it 3-3. We have to learn that you then just defend the point in a situation like that. We can’t commit four men forward and leave ourselves open at the back. Having said that, there were still one or two chances to stop that attack. We couldn’t do that and conceded the winning goal. We shot ourselves in the foot defensively with the mistakes we made as a team. We have to stay focused and pick up points in the coming games. It’s disappointing for Robin that his hat-trick wasn’t rewarded with a point or a win. He showed again how important he is for us.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: We’re extremely disappointed that we couldn’t take a point home after that comeback. It was a disappointing first half in general and the result was the main positive for us. We were better in the second half, but just made a few too many mistakes. We reacted well after conceding and fought our way back. We’ll learn from the positive and negatives in this game. There are a lot of things to work on.

Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo (TSG Hoffenheim): I think we played good football overall and deserved to win the game. We were dynamic on the ball, created a lot of chances and pressed well. I’m obviously not happy that we allowed Gladbach back into the game time and time again though.
