1-1 in international Borussia battle – Ginter and Embolo contribute assists

Four Borussia players started in the 1-1 draw between Switzerland and Germany in the UEFA Nations League. Matthias Ginter and Breel Embolo had starring roles with each player assisting a goal.

Matchday two of the Nations League saw Borussia’s players face off against one another. Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi and Breel Embolo lined up for Switzerland while Matthias Ginter was in the starting lineup for their opponents, Germany. Michael Lang (Switzerland) and Florian Neuhaus (Germany) were unused substitutes. The away side took the lead after almost quarter of an hour in Basel: Matthias Ginter played the ball back to Ilkay Gündogan from the right-hand side, with Gündogan firing the ball home at the near post. The Swiss side grew into the game and found an equaliser in the 58th minute. Embolo created an opening on the left and played the ball inside to Silvan Widmer, who scored at the far post with a first time strike. Embolo was forced off with an injury in the 73rd minute after a challenge with Ginter. The other three Borussia players completed the whole 90 minutes.

Stefan Lainer’s Austria side will play against Romania in Klagenfurt on Monday evening (20:45 CEST). Austria began their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 win over Norway.

The 18-year-old came on as a half-time substitute at SV Eichede’s Ernst-Wagener-Stadion, keeping a clean sheet in his 45 minute appearance. Kaan Kurt, who had played in the first meeting with Denmark last Thursday, returned to Mönchengladbach as planned ahead of the second fixture.
