Sommer: “It gives us courage going into the next games”

Borussia goalkeeper Yann Sommer discusses the 2-2 draw with Inter Milan in the opening game of the UEFA Champions League.

Yann, how are you feeling after the draw in Milan?

Sommer: It’s difficult to describe my feelings on the game. We should have won this match really, but if someone had offered me a point before the game I would have taken it. However, it’s a different thing when you concede an equaliser in the last minute. That was gutting. We knew beforehand that Inter are strong from corner kicks and we’d seen that already on the night. It was a frustrating end to the match.

How do you think the team as a whole performed?

Sommer: The team did a good job and played well. We fought our way into the game and had to do a lot of running. There were a lot of one-on-one duels - it was an intense match. However, we lacked a bit of courage at times in the first half. We didn’t hold onto the ball well enough to show our quality which we definitely have and have showed already. The goals that we scored were very nice.

What can you take away from this game?

Sommer: We drew 2-2 away to a very good Inter side, which naturally gives us a lot of self-confidence. Overall, I’d say it has definitely given us more courage and we’ll be stronger going into the next games. After a bit of time, we’ll look back on this as a point gained and appreciate it.

Following Real Madrid’s loss to Shakhtar Donetsk, what are your thoughts on the group as a whole after the first matchday?

Sommer: We’re just focusing on ourselves for the moment. We’ve got some great games ahead of us in the group that we’re really looking forward to. I’d say I’ve got mixed feelings though, as we should have won last night in Milan and then it would have been a completely different start to the group stages for us. But it is what it is. In the end, it’s a point on the board and that’s no bad thing.
