Year in review: flatex becomes new main sponsor

For eleven years, the logo of Postbank adorned the shirts of Borussia players as they took to the pitch. However, it was all change in the summer of 2020 as the online broker flatex replaced the yellow bar of Postbank with orange on the Foals kit.

Since 1st July 2020, ‘flatex’ has taken the place of ‘Postbank’ on the Borussia shirt, with the online broker replacing the Foals’ former main sponsor after eleven years. “I would like to thank Postbank for the eleven-year partnership we’ve had. Postbank have been a great partner to the club and showed us loyalty when we were not in a great sporting position at first,” said chief executive Stephan Schippers. When Postbank first appeared on the shirts of Borussia players in 2009, VfL had only just escaped the relegation zone as they finished in 15th place. After eleven years, the Foals’ main sponsor indicated that it did not wish to extend the contract in the autumn of last year. “The interruption of the season in mid-March and the matches behind closed doors led to a lot of uncertainty both among football clubs and among potential sponsors. Nevertheless, we knew as a club what we wanted and had an broad outline of what that entailed,” said Schippers.

Contract lasting until 2023

Over the course of the season, VfL and flatex crossed paths and built up a positive rapport. “I have a very good impression of flatex. Mr Niehage is great person to be in contact with and handles the sponsorship personally. flatex is a solid company and they have a clear vision,” reported Borussia’s chief executive. flatex CEO Frank Niehage was also looking forward to the partnership. “We’re proud to be Borussia’s new sponsor. It’s clear that we share a lot of the same values and Borussia are also very hard-working and ambitious. They’re an excellent club and perform at a very high level, alongside having solid finances and a future on the international stage. We’re looking forward to a long-term partnership.” The deal with flatex runs until 2023 with the option for a further year on top of that.

flatex on the attack

In flatex, it’s clear that VfL have a strong partner by their side. Following the takeover of Dutch company Degiro, the flatex are now active in 18 countries across Europe and have more than one million customers. However, CEO Frank Niehage is pursuing bigger goals alongside the Foals: “We’re aiming to build up more international recognition through Borussia and get to two million customers. We’re on the attack.” VfL are also looking for a very similar thing, having achieved a top-four finish in the Bundesliga and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
