Year in review: A once-in-a-lifetime scorpion kick

The Foals certainly scored plenty of goals in 2020, but none of them were as spectacular as Valentino Lazaro's scorpion kick.

It was stoppage time at the BayArena. Borussia were already beaten in their Bundesliga meeting with Bayer Leverkusen on 9th November, with the hosts leading 4-2. There was time for one final attack though. Patrick Herrmann swung in a cross from the right flank that was a little too high for Matthias Ginter to attack, but Valentino Lazaro had other ideas. The Austrian entered an acrobatic forward dive, lifting his trailing right leg to head height and connecting with the ball on the volley with his heel - the perfect scorpion kick. Not only did he direct the ball on target, but it flew into the top corner of the motionless Lukas Hradecky's goal.

The result didn't change, with the Foals still losing 4-3, but Lazaro's goal was on everyone's lips. "Straight after the game, I couldn't really be that happy about my goal; frustration about the defeat was overwhelming. Now that I look back at it, I can really savour it. You only score a goal like that once in your career," said Lazaro. It was also named November's Goal of the Month in Germany and is no doubt very much in the running to win Goal of the Year too.
