Year in Review: Foals reach Round of 16

For the first time in the club’s history, Borussia reached the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Despite losing 2-0 to Real Madrid on the night, the Foals were celebrating shortly after full time thanks to a positive result in the parallel game.

As the final whistle blew in the Estadio Alfredo di Stefano, confirming a 2-0 win for Real Madrid, the Foals gathered by the dugout – far from beaten. Now huddled around a tablet showing the final moments of the parallel game in Group B between Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk, the players and staff knew that only a draw would secure Gladbach’s place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The score was 0-0, and when the referee eventually called full time in the ninth minute of stoppage time, the whole team erupted in celebration. Despite a 2-0 defeat, Borussia had made history by reaching the UCL Round of 16 for the very first time.
