“The next step in our development” - Dortmund match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Gladbach’s 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund on Friday night.

Lars Stindl: We made a brilliant start and had the ball in the net after 40 seconds, and we created the goal just as we had planned. We were unlucky that it got ruled out, but we pushed on and soon got the opener. We lost our thread a little after their equaliser, but Dortmund did well for their goals. We adjusted again before the break though and got more control. We were strong from the get-go in the second half, defended well after we went 3-2 up and deserved to get the win. Going on and making it 4-2 is perhaps the next step in our development.

Florian Neuhaus: It was a very important game for us. We knew that we could make up some ground in the table with a win. I think that you could tell how much it meant to us by the way we played. I’m over the moon with the three points. My goal in the opening minute would have perhaps made things a little easier. I’m not sure I understand why VAR has intervened there again. The referee said to me that he had a clear view of the tackle and that it wasn’t a foul. Fortunately, there’s no need to get hung up on it as we got a deserved win in the end.

Marco Rose: We’re very happy about the result, but both sides played really well. We made a good start and then Dortmund scored two very good goals. After those, we noticed that our game plan wasn’t quite working out. We switched things up and then we started to have more control. It was really important to make it 2-2 before half time. We scored our goals at the perfect time in the second half. Dortmund applied pressure, but we worked hard and defended well. It was a quality all-round performance from the boys. The substitutes also gave it everything. It’s a great end to a demanding week.

Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic: I feel that we had to deal with too many setbacks. Eventually, we weren’t able to deliver a response to them all. It was a high intensity match throughout and we had to put in more effort than our opponents to score a goal. Gladbach were a threat from set-pieces from the start, although we had a couple of moments from them too. At the end of the day, when you concede four goals, it’s difficult to get a result.
