Last-minute defeat in Leipzig

Matchday 23 in the Bundesliga ended with a 3-2 defeat away to RB Leipzig, despite the Foals leading 2-0 at half time.

Borussia Mönchengladbach made a dream start in Leipzig. Breel Embolo drove into the box and was shoved over by Dayot Upamecano, with referee Manuel Gräfe quick to point to the spot. Jonas Hofmann stepped up and converted Gladach’s eleventh penalty of the season to maintain our 100 percent record from twelve yards and make it 1-0 after just six minutes. The visitors followed it up with a second not long after. A deep cross from Valentino Lazaro was headed back across goal by Breel Embolo, and the ball took a deflection off Marcus Thuram’s shoulder and nestled in the back of the net (19’).

The Foals did well to keep RBL quiet in front of goal in the first half, but the home side emerged from the interval with real purpose. Alexander Sorloth soon had a goal back ruled out for handball (51’), but the deficit was then reduced a few minutes later when an unmarked Christopher Nkunku was able to turn in Marcel Halstenberg’s cross (57’). Julian Nagelsmann’s team continued to pile on the pressure and Yussuf Poulsen’s strike from the edge of the box levelled the scored in the 66th minute. Yann Sommer pulled off a stunning save to keep out Emil Forsberg’s free-kick (77’), but Leipzig did end up snatching a late winner, with Sorloth heading in at the back post in the third minute of stoppage time.
