“A day to forget” - Augsburg match reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 3-1 defeat to FC Augsburg on Friday night.

Florian Neuhaus:We’ve come away empty-handed because we didn’t take our chances. I had a good feeling out there today because we were getting forward well in the first half and were playing some good football again. We should have been comfortably leading at the break. At half time, we simply talked about keeping it going and getting our reward, but then Augsburg took the lead from a set piece. We got back level with my goal, but our overall second-half performance wasn’t good enough. It’s a day to forget.

Lars Stindl: It’s a hard result to swallow. We put so much into it. Our positional play was good and we made a lot of right decisions in the final third, yet we’ve come away with a defeat because we didn’t reward our efforts. We even got back into the match after going behind, but perhaps we were overly keen to push on after the equaliser. Their second goal was a silly one to concede because it takes a lucky deflection and sits up perfectly for him. We can’t even start to think about how far we away from who in the table. We just need to win a game again and quick.

Marco Rose: We just can’t get a positive result at the moment. The lads are working incredibly hard and they showed a lot of energy here in Augsburg today too. Ultimately though, we didn’t score the goals and they did, and that leads to us being on this current winless run. Augsburg had maybe one chance in the first half, then we went behind from a set piece, but that still didn’t faze us. We got the equaliser and pushed for a second, and then we were hit with another setback. The lads looked solid in general though and played some nice football for long periods. We’re in a really tough phase right now.

Augsburg head coach Heiko Herrlich: We really struggled to get into the game in the first half. Four of Gladbach’s six chances came from us giving the ball away. We couldn’t get on top of our opponents and were doing a lot of chasing. We were lucky that the penalty didn’t go in; that kept us in the game. In the second half, we tried to implement what we’d hoped to do from the start. It was important to finally score from a corner kick. You could sense that a weight had lifted from the players shoulders almost. We looked better after that, were in the game more and had some decent turnovers. We kept going after their equaliser and had a number of good counterattacking opportunities. Our goals came at exactly the right time. We’re absolutely delighted to have taken all three points against a top side.
