An important figure despite no appearances

After two years at Borussia, Max Grün will depart the club. Even though the third-choice goalkeeper never played for the Foals, he was important for the atmosphere in the dressing room.

“I had two great years at Borussia. I want to return to my hometown now for private reasons,” said Max Grün. The 34-year-old joined Gladbach from SV Darmstadt 98 in 2019 as the third-choice goalkeeper and has now left the club without making any appearances. “It’s a shame Max is going. It was great having him as a part of the goalkeeping group. We’ll definitely miss a lot about him in our small changing room,” said second-choice goalkeeper Tobias Sippel.

“I always give my best”

“The goalkeeping hierarchy was made clear. I knew my role,” said Grün in an interview in April last year. He was always fully committed to this role. “I always put in my absolute all on and off the pitch to get the best out of me and the team.” The 34-year-old was involved in some matchday squads during his two seasons in Mönchengladbach. He was an unused sub in eight Bundesliga games, eight Champions League matches, two Europa League fixtures and two DFB-Pokal clashes.

Crazy and relaxed

Although he never made a competitive appearance for the Foals, Grün still had an important role to play. The 34-year-old was known as the squad’s joker. “Max helped improved us in his own way and always motivated us. We had fun with him,” reflected Yann Sommer. There was rarely a day across the past two years when Grün didn’t make his teammates laugh with a joke. “Maybe you’ve learnt to be a bit crazier and more relaxed from me. Life is serious enough and we should all relax a bit more now and again,” said Grün during his farewell speech to the team. Borussia would like to wish Max all the best for the future!
