It was heartbreak for Andreas Poulsen (photo: imago/Bonnerup) on Monday night, as Denmark were knocked out of the European U21 Championship. The young Danes lost 6-5 in a penalty shootout following the 2-2 draw that went to extra time. Poulsen started the quarterfinal, but was substituted shortly before the break due to an injury. Wahid Faghir put Denmark ahead after half time (69’), before Lukas Nmecha equalised late on (88’) to send the match to extra time. Jonathan Burkardt put Germany in the lead (100’) for the first time in the game, but Victor Nelsson levelled the score again from the spot (108’) to make it 2-2 after 120 minutes of football. In the penalty shootout, Germany goalkeeper Finn Dahmen made two saves, before Paul Jaeckel stepped up to convert the decisive spotkick.

A summer break now awaits for Poulsen before he returns to Mönchengladbach at the beginning of July following his six-month loan at Austria Wien. “I hope that I can prove myself to the new coach at Gladbach. I want to give 100% in every training session and I hope that I can earn my chance then,” said Poulsen.
