Bénes scores to earn Slovakia draw in pre-EUROs friendly

László Bénes scored to earn Slovakia a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria in their first warm-up friendly ahead of this summer’s European Championship.

Slovakia found themselves behind after less than ten minutes as Atanas Iliev put Bulgaria into the lead (9’). Bénes, who was loaned out to FC Augsburg this season, was undeterred by the early setback and found an equaliser just under 20 minutes later. A good pass into the penalty area found the 23-year-old in a dangerous position and he made no mistake, firing a powerful drive home to make it 1-1 (27’). The two sides battled hard in search of a winner, but were ultimately frustrated as both defences held firm to ensure a draw. “I’m really happy that I put in a good performance,” said Bénes, who played the full 90 minutes in Ried, Austria. Slovakia play their second warm-up friendly against Austria on Sunday 6th June in Vienna (17:30 CEST), where László Bénes will face off against fellow Foals Stefan Lainer and Valentino Lazaro, who have been included in the Austria squad.
