Bénes makes EUROs debut in defeat for Slovakia

Slovakia narrowly lost 1-0 to Sweden in their second UEFA EURO 2020 group stage game on Friday afternoon (18th June). László Bénes was subbed on in the final 15 minutes to make his European Championship debut.

"It would be a dream come true for me," Bénes (photo: picture alliance) had said when asked about a possible appearance prior to the tournament getting underway. Bénes was subbed on in the 76th minute for Marek Hamsik. Just seconds before, referee Daniel Siebert had pointed to the spot after Slovakia's goalkeeper Martin Dubravka brought down Sweden's Robin Quaison. Emil Forsberg then converted the penalty to secure a 1-0 win for the Swedes.

Sweden currently top Group E with four points, after a goalless draw against Spain in their EURO opener. Slovakia are in second with three points, after having beaten Poland 2-1. Spain (3rd, 1 point) and Polen (4th, 0 points) will face each other tomorrow evening (19th June, 21:00 CEST).
