Germany record an important win at EURO 2020

Matthias Ginter played the full 90 minutes in Germany’s 4-2 win over Portugal at EURO 2020 – their first victory of the tournament. France drew 1-1 in Budapest against Hungary without Marcus Thuram.

Germany picked up their first win of UEFA EURO 2020, beating holders Portugal 4-2 in Munich. Jonas Hofmann wasn’t in the squad due to his knee injury, while Florian Neuhaus was an unused substitute. Matthias Ginter played the full 90 minutes, again putting in an impressive display.

Portugal took the lead after a quarter of an hour, breaking quickly from a Germany corner. Diogo Jota squared it to Cristiano Ronaldo, who tapped in from close range. Despite this, Germany pushed hard and got their rewards for a good performance. Ruben Dias scored an own goal in the 35th minute and then Joshua Kimmich’s cross was turned home by Raphael Guerreiro four minutes later for a second own goal to give Joachim Löw’s side the lead. After the break, Kai Havertz made it 3-1 (51’), before Robin Gosens headed home a fourth (60’). Jota pulled one back in the 68th minute for Portugal, but Germany held out for a huge three points.

Germany are now second behind France in Group F. The World Cup winners drew 1-1 in Budapest against Hungary earlier that day. Attila Fiola put the hosts ahead on the stroke of half time to send the home crowd delirious. Antoine Griezmann equalised after 66 minutes to keep France top of the group. Borussia’s striker Marcus Thuram didn’t feature for Didier Deschamps’ team, who now lead group F with four points, with Germany ahead of Portugal only because of their head-to-head record. Hungary are bottom with a solitary point going into their game with Germany next week.
