More internationals return to training

Marcus Thuram, Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann have all returned to training following their summer breaks. On Wednesday, Borussia will travel to Munich in order to face FC Bayern München in a friendly that night (18:00 CEST).

Pre-season is in full swing for the Foals. Head coach Adi Hütter guided his team through a two-hour session on the training grounds at BORUSSIA-PARK on Tuesday, with the focus on various drills and a small-sided game.

Denis Zakaria (Covid-19), Alassane Plea (knee capsule injury), Manu Koné (MCL injury), Breel Embolo (thigh muscle injury involving the tendons), Ramy Bensebaini (thigh muscle injury) and Mamadou Doucouré (rehab following Achilles tendon tear) all did not take part in training. Lars Stindl (knee strain) completed an individual session this morning.

Meanwhile, Marcus Thuram, Matthias Ginter, Florian Neuhaus and Jonas Hofmann took part in their first session since returning from holiday following the UEFA EURO 2020. Centre-back Nico Elvedi and goalkeeper Yann Sommer will likely return to team training on Wednesday. Sommer took part in an individual session with goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte at BORUSSIA-PARK on Tuesday already. "The EUROs were an emotional rollercoaster for me. Of course I was very disappointed after we were knocked out. But, I'm still proud of our team and what we accomplished," Sommer said. "I was also looking forward to being back at Borussia. I wanted to catch a few balls and ease myself back into it. Now, I'll up the intensity gradually."

Sommer, Elvedi, Thuram, Ginter, Neuhaus and Hofmann will all not feature in the friendly against Bayern, as the game comes too close to their return. "After the short amount of training they've had, it makes no sense to let our internationals feature in Munich already," said Hütter. "I think that a couple of them could feature against Groningen." The Foals will face the Dutch first-division side on Saturday (15:30 CEST) at BORUSSIA-PARK. Borussia's first competitive game of the new season will be against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Monday, 9th August (20:45 CEST).
