Lainer sidelined with a broken ankle

Stefan Lainer suffered a broken ankle during yesterday’s 4-0 defeat at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and will be out for the foreseeable future. Marcus Thuram is also set for a spell on the sidelines.

Borussia will be without defender Stefan Lainer for the foreseeable future, after the Austrian was diagnosed with a broken ankle following further medical examination on Sunday afternoon. Lainer will undergo surgery, with the details still to be confirmed. The defender was fouled on the edge of the box in the 41st minute against Leverkusen, as Borussia were then awarded a penalty. Captain Lars Stindl stepped up to take it, but had his effort saved.

Lainer joined Borussia Mönchengladbach from RB Salzburg in summer 2019 and has since become Borussia’s first-choice right back. The 28-year-old missed just three of a possible 42 competitive games in his debut season with the Foals,  twice due to a knee injury and once due to a yellow-card suspension. Last season, he missed just one of 46 games across all competitions due to a slight thigh injury.

Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea are both still undergoing medical examinations. Adi Hütter was forced into an early sub in the 20th minute, as Thuram was taken off with a knee injury. The 24-year-old Frenchman will be out for the forseeable future. As for Plea, the striker rolled his ankle in the first half against Leverkusen and was then subbed off in the 63rd minute.
