Embolo: “A perfect night for every Borussia fan”

Breel Embolo spoke to the media following the Foals’ 5-0 win against FC Bayern München in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. Hear from the striker on…

…preparations for the match: FC Bayern are currently one of the best teams in the world. That also serves as motivation. Our team talk ahead of the game was a bit shorter than usual. It was a special game, not only for us but for the coach as well. Of course, it’s never easy to play against FC Bayern München. But, we know that we have a good team, which is why we felt confident ahead of kick-off. We had also thoroughly analysed our previous games. We had some good phases of play in our previous matches, but we lacked the conviction we displayed this time around. This time, we played extremely well for 70 minutes, and were rewarded for it in the end.

…last night: The most important thing is that we win and feel good. It’s also important that we play good football, look to attack and that we have the fans on our side. We managed to bring all that to the table against Bayern yesterday. We could feel it on the pitch. On top of that, we also kept a clean sheet. It was a perfect night for every Borussia fan.

…the team’s performance: We struggled against Hertha BSC last time out in the Bundesliga. We didn’t play badly during the first half, but weren’t rewarded for our efforts. That’s why we knew that we needed to be even more attacking-minded against Bayern. When you’re up against a world-class team like that, then you need to be clinical with your chances. We managed that during the first half. We saw that, if we look dangerous, keep our cool and create chances, that we can pose a real threat. It was a great team performance from us.

…the fantastic start to the game: We got off to a fantastic start, and were rewarded for it. We were extremely efficient. We continued to take our chances after that and the way we ended the game was fantastic. We were able to exploit the spaces that we found. If we manage to score and be efficient, then we are able to find that space for ourselves. We then have the room to use our dynamism and quality to the best of our abilities. That really suits us. We were aggressive and hungry yesterday. In my opinion, it was a well-deserved victory.

…the upcoming game against Bochum: We will take the confidence from this game with us into the weekend. It has to be clear to us now that we have a lot of talent, but that we need to make sure we showcase this all the time. Against so-called weaker teams, we need to be clinical in front of goal. We have a good, young squad that are hungry for more. Our next challenge awaits on Sunday at home against Bochum. We need to make sure that we continue like this, that we use this momentum and stay positive.
