“We’ve delivered a good response” - #FCBBMG reaction

We heard from the players and coaches following Borussia’s 2-1 away win over FC Bayern München in Friday night’s Bundesliga restart.

Florian Neuhaus: It was important to deliver a good response as a team to our recent games, and we did that today. We struggled to get into the match a little and Bayern deservedly went in front, but we came back well and had a great period before the break where we got both our goals. All in all, we implemented our game plan well. Bayern were missing a number of players, but we just wanted to focus on our own game. We had some good counterattacking opportunities, drove forward with real attacking intent and I think you can say we deserved to win.

Christoph Kramer: Of course it’s true that Bayern were without seven very good players, but their starting line-up was still full of quality. We played with a lot of intensity from the off and once we adjusted our pressing after around 20 minutes, we got into some really good positions. We lost the ball too easily at times in the second half and often made the wrong decision, and that allowed Bayern to get a foothold back in the game. We had luck on our side at certain moments, but it’s hard to beat Bayern without that. It’s a very important three points. I hope that it’s the first step in a very good second half of the season, but we can’t forget about the difficult situation we still find ourselves in.

Yann Sommer: I’m over the moon that we managed to see out our narrow lead. We conceded an equaliser very late on last time against Hoffenheim. It would have been a real shame if that had happened again today. Bayern put us under a lot of pressure in the second half and we no doubt had a little bit of luck at time, but we’re delighted that we managed to get the three points. It’s a win and that does us the world of good, but we have to keep going in the next games with the same amount of courage, intensity and belief.

Adi Hütter: We are very happy to have ended our barren run with a win here in Munich. Based on the chances we had, I don’t think we were undeserving of it. Bayern could have scored the equaliser in the second half, but I have to give huge credit to my team. They fought and ran hard for the full 90 minutes, and there were even phases where we dominated. They brought everything that we’ve been working on in training over the last weeks into this game. I was especially pleased with how they reacted to falling behind. They fought their way back into the game and didn’t need long to turn things around.

Bayernhead coach Julian Nagelsmann: Despite all the uncertainties this past week and the many absences we had, we got off to a good start and did well in the first 25 minutes. The fact that we then conceded the equaliser was completely unnecessary. We should have been better positioned inside the penalty box. Gladbach were then able to take the lead from a dead-ball situation. After that, we started playing well again. We looked to attack quickly, which also meant that we opened ourselves up to a few counter-attacks. Nonetheless, we had several chances in the second half. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make any of them count. Unlike the games against them from the first half of the season and in the DFB-Pokal, we were a bit undeserving of tonight’s scoreline.

Christoph Kramer: "I hope that it’s the first step in a very good second half of the season"
Yann Sommer: "It’s a win and that does us the world of good"
