Lainer: “This win should give us some confidence“

Stefan Lainer spoke to the press after our 3-2 home win over FC Augsburg on Saturday. The 29-year-old discussed the run of play, the Foals’ current situation and the coach’s instructions.

Stefan Lainer on…

…the lack of fluency recently: It’s felt like we’ve been more stable over the last few games, but we were still lacking fluency. It’s really tough to get that back. This win should give us some confidence now though.

…the run of play against Augsburg: You could see that we enjoyed our football on the day and that we showed our old selves for large parts of the game. Scoring three goals in a game will do the team the world of good. Leading by only one goal is always so dangerous, so it was really important to take a two-goal lead. When they made it 3-2, we were somewhat nervous again. After our recent matches, there were definitely concerns that we could throw this game away too, however we thankfully got over the line.

…recent developments: We’ve conceded too many goals in recent games, though we’ve been slightly unlucky at times too. We didn’t allow them many chances today. This game must and will give us confidence. The team has a lot of quality and we’ve got more consistency into our game over recent matches.

…the Foals’ current sporting situation: We’re obviously still in a tricky situation. We simply couldn’t have afforded to lose against Augsburg – things would have been really precarious then. We’ve not yet pulled clear from the wrong end of the table. We’ve accepted the challenge and we know the importance of it. We need to try and get out of this situation as quickly as possible so that we can get that aforementioned fluency back in our game. During a situation like this, you have to fight, run hard and slog it out.

…the coach’s instructions: I believe that we’re doing what the coach wants from us more and more. Things are going better on the pitch and we’re all fighting for one another. We’ve recently shown this togetherness that’s required of us. I’m confident that we can get back on track, even if we’ve got some tough opponents coming up. We need to accept that – we want to keep on winning.
