“We deserved to lose” - #VfBBMG reaction

We heard from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 3-2 loss to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday evening.

Yann Sommer: We deserved to lose today. Stuttgart were better than us in every department in the second half. We’re not set up well for their winning goal and underestimated the threat. We need to do better as a collective. It’s down to us as a team to put up a fight. There are a lot of things that need fixing and we have to do that in the next game.

Christoph Kramer: Despite how deep we were sitting, you never had the feeling that we were compact. Even before we went 2-0 up, Stuttgart had a phase where they could have scored a couple of goals. There are a lot of things to tackle. I can completely understand the fans who are left frustrated by today’s game.

Adi Hütter: Throwing away a 2-0 lead and then ultimately losing the game is incredibly frustrating and disappointing. Stuttgart deserved to win in the end because we didn’t know how to deal with our two-goal lead. We conceded the first very quickly and then we failed to calm things down in the second half. We didn’t defend well either; we simply cannot be losing every crucial duel – that put us on course for defeat today.

VfB Stuttgart head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: We started well and had two massive opportunities to score before their opener. We ended up going 2-0 down from their only chances, so it was all the more important to get it back to 2-1 before the break. We continued to play well in the second half, working some good attacks and keeping things tidy at the back. There was a brief phase after we got it back at 2-2 where we were a little passive, but we soon got back on track and had chances to go ahead earlier than we did. I’m delighted that the boys were able to get the reward that their performance deserved.
