Beyer: “A weight off the shoulders”

Jordan Beyer delivered a strong performance in the 2-0 win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, winning an impressive 93% of his challenges. In an interview, the 21-year-old spoke about the current situation and the upcoming derby against 1. FC Köln.

Jordan, now that you’ve had some time to process it, what are your thoughts on the game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth?

Beyer: We did really well during the first half and deservedly scored twice. After the break, we took our foot off the gas a bit and allowed Fürth to get back into the game. Overall, it was important that we picked up three points. It really took a weight off our shoulders, because we are now 11 points clear of 16th place. We aren’t under as much pressure anymore and want to get stuck into every game and build on the things that we have done well over the last weeks.

You mentioned this feeling of a weight being lifted – is that something that resonates with the entire team?

Beyer: Even when things weren’t going well, we knew that we had the quality to get ourselves out of this difficult situation. We haven’t always played well this season, but I think that over the last weeks you could see that we know how to play good football and that we work hard as a team. The 10 points we have taken from our last four games have been really good for us.

You kept three clean sheets in those four games. As a defender, does that make you feel really good?

Beyer: Definitely. Keeping a clean sheet is just as important to a defender as scoring a goal. We can build on the fact that we have kept three clean sheets recently.

Since the home game against VfLWolfsburg at the end of February, you have only missed the game against Stuttgart due to a yellow-card suspension. What do you have to say about your personal development?

Beyer: I’m very happy that things are going well at the moment. At the same time, I think that I still have a long way to go. I want to continue to prove myself in training every week, continue to improve and play as many games as possible.

Next Saturday (18:30 CEST), the Rhine Derby awaits us at BORUSSIA-PARK. This would be the first time you face off against Köln with the first team. What can you tell us about the game?

Beyer: As a player who grew up nearby, it’s something special to be able to play in a derby. I’m already extremely motivated. We are really looking forward to the fans and the atmosphere in front of a sold-out crowd. We can’t wait and want to do everything we can to win the game.

Jordan Beyer won 93% of his challenges against Fürth.
