“A fortuitous point” – #SCFBMG reaction

We gathered the reaction from Jonas Hofmann, Roland Virkus and the two coaches following Borussia’s 3-3 draw with SC Freiburg on Saturday.

Jonas Hofmann: We started just as we had hoped. We wanted to be compact and sit a little deeper. There were a lot of positives in the first half and our quick interplay for the second goal is just the kind of football we were looking to produce. We know just how quick Breel Embolo is and that you can play the ball through to him in positions like that. We’re in a difficult phase at the moment, which was made abundantly clear last week. Today was a very fortuitous point against when you look at the second half, but when you consider that we were 2-0 ahead at the break, it’s two points dropped.

Roland Virkus: We started well and were 2-0 up fairly quickly. Then the same thing happened that has happened in recent weeks; a moment, in this case their penalty to make it 2-1, led to a string of problems. What gives me hope is that the team didn’t give up, but instead came back and got the equaliser – that was a step forward. Despite being 3-2 down, we continued to believe in ourselves and fought for the point, so credit to the team for that. For the future, it’s important that we will stick by each other, together with the fans.

Adi Hütter: I was very happy with our performance in the first half. We wanted to stay compact and catch them on the counter, and we did that well. Unfortunately, Freiburg got a goal back too quickly in the second half. They upped the pressure a lot and we weren’t able to shake it off. The team continued to fight until the end and got the equaliser through Lars Stindl. It’s a very important point in our current situation against a very good team, even though we would have preferred more having led 2-0.

SC Freiburg head coach Christian Streich: The lads are gutted. We’ve been clinical at times this season, but Gladbach were better than us at that today. The team showed incredible character after going 2-0 down so early on. It was important to maintain our structure, and the supporters helped us immensely too. We’re obviously disappointed with the result, despite having trailed 2-0, but the performance and the team’s mentality were phenomenal.
