Nations League: Trio claim first win with Switzerland

Borussia trio Yan Sommer, Nico Elvedi and Breel Embolo finally claimed their first Nations League win of the campaign, as Switzerland edged Portugal 1-0 in Geneva in their fourth match.

While Yann Sommer watched the match from the bench, the recently injured Nico Elvedi returned to the starting XI. Breel Embolo also started the game. The Swiss got off to a lightning start in Geneva, when Benfica’s Haris Seferovic got on the end of a Silvan Widmer cross to head his side in front with just 55 seconds on the clock. The visitors got themselves back into the game and enjoyed the most of the possession for the rest of the half. Portugal, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Guerreiro and Joao Moutinho, looked the more threatening of the two sides in the second half, but ultimately failed to cause the Swiss defence any real problems.

Breel Embolo was brought off with 65 minutes on the clock and his side managed to hold on for a 1-0 win, giving the Swiss their first win of the current Nations League campaign. Murat Yakin’s side are sat on three points after four games and currently occupy fourth spot in Group A2. Switzerland are next in action in September when they are due to face Spain (24.09) and the Czech Republic (27.09). Sommer, Elvedi and Embolo, however, have a well-deserved summer break to look forward to. The other Borussia players on international duty will play their final fixtures in the coming days.
