“A world-class performance from Yann Sommer” - #FCBBMG reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 1-1 draw away at FC Bayern on Saturday evening.

Christoph Kramer: We know what a great goalkeeper we have in Yann Sommer, so we can afford to let them have the odd shot. He put in an extraordinary performance today. Yann is a top bloke. We also had a bit of luck on our side – it’s only fair to say. But you need that away at Bayern; they’re in fantastic form. We threw everything at it today and defended deep. Our positional play got a little sloppy when we switched to a back-five, but we made up for it with our passion. That’s what you have to do if you want a result in Munich.

Yann Sommer: It was a really tough game today. We knew what would be coming our way. Bayern are a top side and are in superb form. We defended well for the most part, but we know that you can’t defend every single attack against a team like them. Their goal was just really well worked. We were tired by the end because we’d defended with so much passion and done a lot of running. You’re under permanent pressure against Bayern – at some point, a gap is going to appear and they will use it. I’m very happy that I was able to put in a good performance today and that it helped us come away with a point.

Head coach Daniel Farke: It’s definitely a solid point for us tonight. Normally, you’re disappointed to concede a late equaliser. However, tonight you can’t say that Bayern didn’t deserve a point. We played with a lot of passion and delivered a great team performance, plus we were solid in defence and showed how resilient we can be. We wanted to have a lot of possession, but were a bit sloppy when it came to creating chances in the first half. If that hadn’t been the case, then we would have been able to create a lot more for ourselves. Bayern really upped the pressure after the break. It wasn’t easy for us tonight, but my team displayed an incredible fighting spirit, so hats off to them. It was a world-class performance from Yann Sommer tonight. That’s exactly what you need in order to take points away at Bayern München. Together with Manuel Neuer, Yann is one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, as well as internationally. We’re very glad to have him as our number 1.

FC Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann: I was frustrated with the result, because we played really well. I was also unhappy with the referee, because every close call he made seemed to go Gladbach’s way. The only criticism I can level towards my team is that they didn’t make the most of their chances tonight.
