Sommer is Borussia’s player of the month for August

Borussia’s fans have voted Yann Sommer as their player of the month for August. The Swiss goalkeeper won the vote presented by Cichon Personalmanagement ahead of three of his teammates.

Yann Sommer won the vote for player of the month in August, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement, winning around 50% of the vote in the FohlenApp. He came ahead of Ko Itakura (42%), Marcus Thuram (6%), and Alassane Plea (2%).

Sommer has continued his good form from last season this last month.  In the first three Bundesliga games, against TSG Hoffenheim (3-1), FC Schalke 04 (2-2) and Hertha BSC (1-0), the goalkeeper has played his part in the Foals collecting seven points, being a reliable last line of defence. In the last away game against Bayern Munich (1-1), the Switzerland international was then the stand-out player on the pitch.

New record: 19 saves made

Borussia’s number one made 19 saves in total against Bayern, breaking the Bundesliga record in the process. Since data collection began in 1992, no Bundesliga goalkeeper had saved more than 14 opposition shots in a game. Sommer’s own record before the Bayern game was twelve saves. “I am happy that I put in a good performance and we were able to pick up a point,” said Sommer afterwards, humble as ever.

Unsurprisingly, the vote for player of the match in the FohlenApp ended in Sommer’s favour. Almost 97% of all participants voted for Sommer, who also broke a further record last weekend. With 266 appearances, the 33-year-old became the outright leader for Bundesliga appearances by a Swiss player. “I feel honoured. 266 is an enormous number. When I came here eight years ago I never thought that I would go on to play so many Bundesliga games,” said Sommer.
