“Our best performance this season” – #BMGRBL reaction

We gathered the thoughts from the players and coaches after Borussia’s 3-0 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday night.

Jonas Hofmann: We played really well over the whole 90 minutes today – it was probably our best performance this season. We only played a handful of long balls out of the back, which made it hard for Leipzig to press us. We were really in our rhythm in the first half, but I think we combined nicely in the second half too and made it hard for Leipzig to get a foothold in the game. I could have scored four goals today if I had been more focused with my finishing, but that doesn’t matter if you win 3-0. We can go into the international break very happy.

Julian Weigl: It was a thoroughly deserved win. We were clinical in the first half and took our first two chances, which made the game a little easier for us of course. I’m really proud of the team and the way we went about the game. We really got stuck into the tackles and played a brilliant first half. Leipzig put us under a little pressure after the restart, but we didn’t allow them many clear-cut chances; everyone chased back and defended for the team. We made the most of the spaces in attack and created another three good goalscoring opportunities, so we could have won by more today, but we would have bitten your hand off for a 3-0 win ahead of the match.

Daniel Farke: We delivered a very strong and sophisticated performance. Our pressing intensity was incredibly high in the first half. We were very dominant and our structure in possession was good. We also held onto the ball well and cut out their counterattacking threat. We deservedly led 2-0 at the break. We were a little deeper in the second half because we didn’t want to get caught on the break, yet we still had control over the game and enjoyed good spells of possession. Even after our third goal, we created a number of counterattacking opportunities and promising chances to score more goals, and we didn’t give them any openings at the back.

RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose: You could feel the effects Wednesday’s intense Champions League match in the opening stages. We struggled to get into the game and went 1-0 down while we were still trying to find out feet. Gladbach were very aggressive and incisive with the ball, which was the biggest difference in the end. Borussia played well and fully deserved to win, although we weren’t without our chances. We had a lot of turnovers, but we didn’t make the most of them because of some sloppiness.

Julian Weigl: "I’m really proud of the team and the way we went about the game"
Daniel Farke: "We delivered a very strong and sophisticated performance"
