Sommer and Elvedi play their part in historic win – second block of international fixtures starts

Yann Sommer and Nico Elvedi were involved in an historic victory for Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League against Spain. On Sunday, the second block of international fixtures starts for Borussia’s internationals.

SWITZERLAND

“It is a good win for us after a difficult start to the Nations League,” said head coach Murat Yakin after the final whistle. His team had just won 2-1 against Spain and made history in the process, with the win being the first time a Switzerland national team had won on Spanish soil. Yann Sommer (Photo: imago images/NurPhoto) and Nico Elvedi both played the full 90 minutes and heavily contributed to the win – especially Sommer, who made a key save from Carlos Soler to help his team stay in front. The goals for Switzerland were scored by Manuel Akanji and former Borussia player Breel Embolo.

With the win, Switzerland move off the foot of the table ahead of the last Nations League matchday and they can secure their status this coming Tuesday (20:45 CEST) against the Czech Republic. In order to stay in Nations League A, Switzerland need at least a draw.
