Yann Sommer named NRW Footballer of the Year

Yann Sommer has won the FELIX Award, making him the North Rhine-Westphalia Footballer of the Year for 2022. Christofer Heimeroth, Borussia’s first-team co-ordinator, accepted the award at Friday evening’s gala at the Rheinterrasse in Düsseldorf on behalf of the goalkeeper.

“I’m really pleased to have won this award, it’s an absolute honour and fills me with pride,” said Yann Sommer in a video message played at Friday evening’s sporting gala at the Rheinterrasse in Düsseldorf. The goalkeeper was unable to collect the prize in person due to his involvement with the Switzerland national team at the World Cup, but Christofer Heimeroth, Borussia’s first-team co-ordinator, accepted the award on his behalf.

This is the second time Sommer has been named NRW Footballer of the Year, having already picked up the FELIX Award in 2019. This year, he beat Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund), Simon Terodde (FC Schalke 04) and Marvin Schwäbe (1. FC Köln) to win the “Football FELIX”, an award voted for by the fans. The FELIX Award is organised by the NRW Football Association’s and the NRW state chancellery and recognises outstanding sporting achievements.
