Thuram reaches World Cup final with France

Marcus Thuram and the France national team have reached the final of the World Cup. The Borussia forward came off the bench in his side’s 2-0 semi-final win over Morocco and had a hand in the second goal.

Marcus Thuram (photo: imago images / Kraft)has the chance to become the seventh Borussia player to win the World Cup on Sunday, following in the footsteps of Berti Vogts, Rainer Bonhof, Hacki Wimmer, Jupp Heynckes und Wolfgang Kleff (all 1974) and Christoph Kramer (2014). Thuram would become the first non-German to lift the trophy while at the club.

France completed the journey to the final with a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Wednesday evening. Theo Hernandez opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but the North African side reacted well and almost equalised shortly before the break but Jamad El Yamiq was denied by the post. Morocco also had chances in the second half but couldn’t get the ball over the line.

Thuram replaced Oliver Giroud in the 65th minute and brought a fresh wave of energy to the French attack – about a quarter of an hour after coming on, Thuram found Kylian Mbappé from the left, who drove forward and beat a number of defenders. His shot was deflected into the path of Randal Kolo Muani, who had the easiest task of tapping into the open goal.

France will take on Argentina on Sunday at 16:00 CET as they look to defend their title from 2018. To date, only Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) have managed to win the World Cup on two consecutive occasions.
